Nemaha Valley Angus, Inc. is a family operation in northern Nemaha County, KS near the Nebraska border. The brothers and their respective spouses involved in the operation are Neal & Marya, Leon, Alan & Ronda, Mark & Franci, and Robert & Mary Haverkamp. Neal manages the cowherd while Robert oversees the row-crop operation. Leon, Alan, and Mark each manage their respective aspects of Haverkamp Brothers, Inc. which is a farrow to finish swine enterprise also located outside of Bern, KS. We currently run over 500 mother cows with over 200 head of those being Registered Angus. The cows are divided between spring and fall calving herds to spread out labor needs. In addition this allows us to provide our private treaty genetic customers with bulls that suit their needs throughout the year. In 1987, at age 16, Neal purchased his first commercial cows and in 1993 the Registered Angus herd was founded with the purchase of six registered bred heifers. Quality females have been added over the years with purchases from Rinkes Cattle Company of Holton, KS and the entire Cypresshurst Angus herd from Bob and Glenda Hall of Leavenworth, KS. More recently females have been purchased from Molitor Angus of Zenda, KS, a herd noted for producing many Pathfinder award-winning cows. The females purchased from these herds form the strong maternal base, which our program is built around. Artificial insemination (A.I.) has been used extensively since 1995. The use of embryo transfer to produce full siblings from outstanding proven cows began in earnest in 2005. These tools allow us to provide proven and predictable genetics to our customers. Through the disciplined use of balanced multiple trait selection we strive to produce genetics that excel at calving ease, growth, feed efficiency, carcass and maternal. Our definition of maternal is not just milk but also includes mothering ability, udder quality, fertility, longevity and of course disposition. Our goal is to continue to improve feedlot and carcass traits while not straying from the fundamental strengths of the Angus breed. We feel taking this direction will lead to genetics that provide optimal performance in all segments of the industry while providing the consumer with the high quality product they desire. Since 2001 NVA, Inc has been collecting individual carcass data on steers raised in our herd and purchased from bull customers. We have now collected data on almost one thousand head of cattle, most of which were calf feds slaughtered between 14 and 15 months of age. This data is collected to ensure that we are producing what the consumer demands, high quality beef. From 2004 to the spring of 2007 we have had an average Certified Angus Beef acceptance rate of right at 30%, well above the industry average. We proudly target the CAB brand, as we believe to stay in the beef business and be successful, value must be added to the end product. The end product is beef and it all begins with superior genetics that can do it all. Through performance testing, ultrasound, feedlot and carcass data collected from our cattle we are verifying that our genetics work in the real world where profit is what matters in the end.
